October 26th (B) and 27th (A)

Went over Assignment: 8-2 (#1-8) TOTALLY on the board

Also, gave students three more GREAT examples of how to Solve a System of Equations by Substitution

Assignment: 8-2 Practice Worksheet (#2,4,6,8,10, and 12)

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

October 22nd (B) and 25th (A)

8.2 Substitution

-- keeps it balanced!
--the two values must be equal!

Substitute means:
1. to put (something in place of another)
2. to take the place of; replace
3. to replace (one or more elements) with other elements

STEPS TO SOLVE A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS BY SUBSTITUTION:

1. Solve ONE equation for ONE of the variables (Solve for x or y)
2. Substitute (replace) value of that variable into the OTHER equation
3. Solve that equation for the remaining variable
4. Find the value of the remaining variable (substitute again using equation from step 1)

Assignment: 8-2 Study Guide (#1-8)

Sunday, October 24, 2010

October 20th (B) and 21st (A)

Review:

As a class we worked on identifying the terms in an equation, and how to "move" the terms from one side of the equal sign to the other (opposite). Four VERY explicit examples were discussed, shown on the Promethian Board, and analyzed.

Assignment: p. 459 (#33-38)

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

October 18th (B) and 19th (A)

8.1 Systems of Equations

System of Equations - Set of equations with the same variables.

It's solution is an ordered pair of number that make both equations true.

***WE CAN FIND THE SOLUTION BY GRAPHING AND LOOKING FOR INTERSECTIONS

Three types of solutions:

1. One Solution (where the two lines meet)
2. Parallel lines - NO Solution
3. Same line - Infinite - Many Solutions

Assignment: Worksheet 8.1 (#1-6)

October 8th (A) and 11th (B)

Homework questions
Homework Quiz

Assignment: p. 440 (#26-30)

Next class: Test over 71.-7.2, 7.3, and 7.8

Chapter 7 Test:
Solving Inequalities
Set-builder Notation
Graphing on a number line
Replacement set
Graphing 2-variable inequalities

You can make one sheet of notes to take into the test. You can use your homework quizzes too.

For extra practice at home:
p. 444
#12-15 (7.1)
#18-21 (7.2)
#24-29 (7.3)
#48-64 (7.8)

1st Quarter missing work is due by Wednesday, 10-13-10 by 3:15.

October 6th (A) and 7th (B)

7-8 Graphing Inequalities in 2 Variables

*** treat like equations

I can...
*graph an equality on a coordinate plane

Steps:
1) Solve for y.
2) Graph the line.
3) Shade - Choose a test point and test it!

Remember:
LESS THAN or GREATER THAN is a dashed line Less than/equal to; or greater than/equal to; is a solid line

Assignment: 7-8 Study Guide and 7-8 Practice

October 4th (A) and 5th (B)

PowerPoint Notes
Text: 436-441
7-8/Worksheet (#1-6)

September 30th (A) and October 1st (B)

HOMEWORK QUIZ

Inequality Puzzle Activity.

September 28th (A) and 29th (B)

7.3 Solving More Inequalities

I can...
*solve an inequality with variables on both sides
*find a solution set given a replacement set

Review from Chapter 5
To solve, with variables on both sides:
1) Simplify (distribute, exponents, like terms)
2) Get variable terms on one side
3) SOLVE!

Replacement Set: A set of numbers from which values for the variable may be chosen.
*Simply limiting our choices.

Assignment: Page 402, (#16-44 EVENS)

September 22nd (A) and 23rd (B)

7.1-7.2 Solving Inequalities

I can...
*solve an equality using +, -, x, /
*graph solutions on a number line
*give solutions using Set-builder notation

Properties of Inequalities
1) You can add or subtract the same number from both sides.
2) You can multiply or divide by the same POSITIVE number on both sides.
#) You can multiply or divide by the same NEGATIVE number on both sides AND change the direction of the symbol.
