Review #3 (1.3) ORDER OF OPERATIONS
Remember that ORDER does matter!
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally...
What does that mean?
1st - P = Parenthesis; grouping symbols such as parenthesis, brackets, fraction bar and absolute value.
2nd - E = Exponents
3rd - M = Multiplication
3rd - D = Division
5th - A = Addition
5th - S = Subtraction
In other words: PEMDAS must be the order that is followed.
Remember that Multiplication and Division happen at the same time; whichever comes first, from left to right. Remember that Addition and Subtraction happen at the same time; whichever of the two comes first, from left to right.

Review #2 (Section 1.7) THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
I can:
Use the distributive property to:
**simplify expressions
**multiply
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY - for all real numbers a, b, and c
a (b+c) = ab + ac
a (b-c) = ab - ac
SIMPLIFY -
*Perform any operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide);
*Combine LIKE TERMS (terms with the same variable(s) to the same power(s)).
*ADD THE COEFFICIENTS
Assignment:

Review #1 - Section 2.3 Adding and Subtracting Integers
Upon completion of this section:
I CAN...
- find the absolute value of a number.
- add and subtract integers (including negatives).
ABSOLUTE VALUE - A number's DISTANCE (cannot be negative) from zero on the number line.
- positive value of a number
- symbol: n
Remember: Integers are positive and negative!
RULES:
Adding Integers (2)
- To add integers with the same sign, ADD their ABSOLUTE VALUES and keep the common sign.
- To add integers with different signs, SUBTRACT their ABSOLUTE VALUES and keep the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value.
Subtracting Integers
- To subtract integers, ADD the OPPOSITE
*change 2 signs.
Assignment:
***Skills Practice Sheet #2-2 - COMPLETE: The FIRST COLUMN on the front of the sheet (page 63) and the back of the sheet (page 68)
A-Day is due on Friday, 8-20-10
B-Day is due on Monday, 8-23-10

Welcome Back!
Summer is over and you are fortunate enough to find yourself in Mr. Schwartz's Algebra B class!
I look forward to getting to know you this year, having some fun, laughing, and even learning a little math along the way. On this blog, you will find notes, assignments, and any important information on our class throughout the year listed on a day-by day basis. So if you miss a day of class, you can visit this site and get caught up on everything we covered that day.
If you ever need more help that this site provides, you can visit me in my room (C-14) or contact me via:
